Word Families and Rhyming Words


Word family, also known as phonogram, is a group of words sharing a common pattern of vowels and consonants.

There are various different word families that can help children develop skills of reading and writing. These words with a common pattern of vowels and consonants can help children, beginners and strugglers to crack the cod eof inconsistent language decode new words.

Word families and rhyming words share the same concept of vowels and consonants. The only difference is that rhyming words are part of the word families. Make your children understand that rhyming words like bear and pear that fall under the same word family are spelled in similar ways. Two words outside the word family can also sound to be similar. Words like hair and mare do not belong to one single family but still rhyme words. So, make your children understand that although most of the rhyming words belong to the same word family, there are some that rhyme even though don’t belong to the same family.
